The effects of global warming and climate change have wreaked havoc on communities worldwide, leading to severe environmental, economic, and social consequences. These disruptions threaten livelihoods, displace populations, and damage infrastructure.

Rising sea temperatures and extreme weather conditions trigger destructive hurricanes, tornadoes, typhoons, etc. There is also a surge in glacial melting, landslides, floods and droughts intensify, devastating cities, disrupting daily life, and impacting livelihood on a massive scale. Heatwaves and wildfires cause significant economic losses and pose serious safety hazards to affected communities in these countries. Additionally, these catastrophes have a detrimental effect on the wellbeing of individuals and communities.

What kind of a world and planet are we leaving behind for the future generations? As a parent, I hope that it’s a world that is safe, inclusive, compassionate, equitable, and sustainable as well as one which nurtures innovation and creativity to grow and flourish.

The most critical aspect however, is the sustainability of the planet. There will be no humanity, and no people, if there is no planet that we can live in. The future generations should live in a world with pure air, clean water, nature’s flora and fauna, and green spaces around for them to breathe and thrive in a better world tomorrow.

In order for our children to live in this environmental haven, it is our obligation to ensure that there is a mindful and consistent balance, between the rapid technological development for the advancement of humanity, and preservation of earth’s diverse natural resources.

Championing the cause of saving our planet cannot be done by a few individuals in scattered groups around the world. It must be a collaborative effort between governments, organizations and individuals globally.

  • The government must establish ethical climate policies for businesses, ensure corporate accountability and global collaboration amongst all the nations, for increased conservation and sustainability efforts.
  • There must be education and awareness programs for clean technology, reduction of carbon emissions, deforestation and reforestation, conservation of rivers and oceans from plastic waste, incentives for eco-friendly businesses in sustainable agriculture, sponsoring climate resistant infrastructure, and efficient disaster management processes.
  • Communities and individuals must promote waste management practices with a focus on reuse and recycle, conserving water, implementing rainwater harvesting and other practices.

As governments and citizens of the world, we must take committed action today to ensure that there is a sustainable and healthy world for our children to live in.
